The School of Independent Life: Media Literacy

Our camp taught media literacy skills to 25 teenagers who are fostered or have difficult circumstances at home. Over two days the young people learned essential skills for our digital world: critical thinking, understanding information bubbles, and how to create own quality content. We want to thank our charismatic speakers, volunteers and donors for making this possible!

Developing potential through mentoring and tutoring

Children can’t learn well when they’re stressed and don't have a stable home. We start with a personal mentor, then when a child has a supportive role model in their life we can help with tutoring. This brings positive changes for children like Maria, and develops their potential so they can succeed in life.

International volunteers give online tutoring

Can international volunteers personally help a child in Ukraine during the pandemic? Absolutely! 12 young people in Germany helped 12 disadvantaged young people in Ukraine to improve their English conversation skills through weekly online tutoring. The next tutoring course will begin in September.

The story of our Parenting in Action journal

This year our expert journal went to 6,000 people who care for children in 22 regions of Ukraine. The central theme was The Power of the Family, and Ukrainian experts contributed articles to help foster families. Who is involved and how does this help? The first "School of Independent Life" event for teenagers took place! During the two day camp, 22 boys and girls from disadvantaged backgrounds learned more about the value of money and how to manage it wisely and carefully, as part of our STEP programme.

Help for families in crisis

373 children received food parcels this winter, with loads of fresh fruit and 73 sets of groceries delivered. To give longer-term solutions we are transitioning some children into our sponsorship and other programmes, with 5 families selected to start as soon as possible. And Covid didn’t stop us from spreading Christmas cheer through our volunteers’ Shrek-themed video.

From care to independence

Nastia has started a small sewing business with our help, so she can support her two small children with an added income. Our STEP team helps young people prepare for independent life, giving them the skills and opportunities they need, and Nastia is one of young people we work with.

New mentors ready to help children

We are happy to announce that 18 people completed our mentor training! Two training courses were delivered, enabling mentors to be a strong support for orphans or children who don’t have parental care. Our Guardian Angel programme provides mentors and tutors to help change a child's future.
