How Sponsorship Helps Ukrainian Children Achieve Their Dreams

Maksym Zhuravchak is a talented theatre student and actor at the Les Kurbas Theatre, where his performances draw full houses and resounding applause. Soon, Maksym will star in Siddhartha by Hans Hesse, a story of self-discovery and life’s endless wonders. His journey to becoming an actor demonstrates how years of sponsorship have opened doors and supported his artistic growth.

Our partnership with Maksym began when he was a high school student from a large, financially struggling family in a small village in the Lviv region. His talent was evident, but the family couldn’t afford to support his studies. Through Care in Action e.V.’s Sponsorship programme, Maksym accessed extra lessons in English, mathematics, and Ukrainian, enhancing his skills. When he discovered his passion for broadcasting, the programme provided recording equipment to nurture his talent in voice work, helping him take the first steps towards acting.

“Recording equipment helped me develop my voice and control it. Initially, I wanted to be a voice-over artist, but I fell in love with theatre,” he says. Maksym began recording for private companies, honing his skills further. With sponsorship funding tutoring in core subjects, he excelled in exams and secured a state-funded place at Ivan Franko National University.

Today, sponsorship funds advanced choreography and vocal lessons, which are critical for audition success. “Choreography improves posture, flexibility, and coordination, while vocal training refines breathing and diction – essential for any actor,” Maksym explains. Now, he shares his experiences with others in the programme, inspiring future performers.

Maksym’s story illustrates how modest but consistent support can transform lives, nurturing potential and enabling dreams to flourish.

Supporting Creativity in the Veselovksy Family

Kateryna and Liuba Veselovski are another testament to how timely support can open doors for gifted children. The sisters live in a creative and loving family of eight children, including two adoptees. Twenty years ago, their parents, Olena and Ihor, moved from Lviv to the countryside to improve their children’s health. There, they cultivated a small farm while fostering a passion for education and Ukrainian culture.

Since 2020, the family has faced mounting challenges. Their home deteriorated, and the parents’ health declined as the effects of war took their toll, leaving them unable to fully support their children. Kateryna and Liuba, high school students, found themselves sharing a small room with their parents, lacking space for privacy, creativity, or study.

Despite this, the girls remained dedicated to self-improvement, excelling in crafts, singing, and writing. Members of the vocal and instrumental group Aporium, they also sold handmade crafts at charity fairs, but their potential was limited by their living conditions.

In 2023, sponsorship funding restored their damaged home and provided a new room for the girls. In 2024, the programme financed the replacement of their old wood stove, creating a warm, inspiring space for creativity and study. Sponsorship also supports their art supplies and preparations for university entrance exams.

“Their dream of having a creative studio is coming true. We could never have achieved this alone,” says their mother, Olena. Kateryna and Liuba are now preparing for entrance exams to study art at university, buoyed by the hope and stability sponsorship has brought.
