Tuesday night, Care in Action welcomed a weary, but relieved mother and her two young daughters from Lviv who travelled out of Ukraine to Poland and then on to Germany. Upon disembarking from the train, the younger daughter asked her mother, “No one shoots at us here?”
Sadly, for many weeks, these girls have been experiencing the strain and fear of war in their community, and in their school, as refugees move west to Lviv. Our Starnberg-based volunteers are preparing to welcome more families by securing local accommodation for refugees and financial support from donors worldwide.
Meanwhile in Ukraine, we are assisting people fleeing the fighting, helping them travel towards Lviv and onwards out of the country. In Zhtomyr an explosion destroyed the building opposite a refugee centre, where a mother and baby we are in contact with are sheltering. All the windows were shattered at 2 AM. We are finding volunteers to help them travel to our shelter in Lviv.
Our team has extracted five young women out of Kyiv where there is constant military assault. In Lviv they have family or the hope of travel out of Ukraine. One of these young women is Vasilyna, in the top left picture, who we have known since she was a small child. (story here).
We also facilitated travel to Hungary for a low-income mother (with only 12 Euro in her pocket) and her small child (picture above centre). Our team arranged for them to be looked after by a Hungarian-based friend who will help them settle.
Whenever possible, we are connecting people in Ukraine with their contacts in Hungary and Poland and facilitating travel into these countries. For example, 7 people from Donbas stayed in the home of our Director in Lviv Wednesday night, as the 8 places that were available in the hostel we are working with were full. We helped the Donbas family travel to the Polish border the next morning. (picture above right)
In addition, our staff and volunteers in Lviv continue to receive refugees and find shelter, as well as procure and distribute needed medical supplies, food, and clothing for refugees arriving in Lviv. In this regard, we are cooperating with other support groups in their efforts to obtain materials for the many fleeing Ukrainians.
Our team in Lviv is sending an urgent request for “200 sleeping bags, 200 sleeping mats and baby food for accepting and taking care of refugees who are arriving in Lviv from Eastern, Central and Southern Ukraine.” They can collect from the Polish border, or purchase in Ukraine if we find a supplier.
Requests for our assistance are broadening and intensifying. Donations are needed more now than ever as the situation inside Ukraine further deteriorates. Your help is greatly appreciated.
