There were 130 children and parents at our Family Camps in June, and each of them left with new skills and happy shared experiences. From art, games and a sports quest, to expert-led psychology workshops, we went all out for the foster families who need our support.
Foster parents across Ukraine say they need training to support vulnerable children. There were national discussions on the Day of Adoptive Parents about how they need quality time off, as parents and as a family. Training and a break are just what our two annual Family Camps offer!
“What I valued most in the camp is its family atmosphere, love and support. Your support is a big blessing for me and my family and an example of how to strengthen families who foster, which is so needed. Your professional team and volunteers have given 100% and we appreciate their approach, preparation and communication. We see how our children have become more open and independent, and we parents are inspired by new knowledge and a great rest. Thank you so much, Care in Action!” – Maria Skutar, Family Style Orphanage mother
In Ukraine there are children who need care because of the problems of low income, unplanned pregnancies and lack of social support systems. Neglected children may go to institutional care before a foster family is sought. To provide a family environment for some of these children, Family Style Orphanages are also created, where a mother or couple will live as a family with ten or more children. Our goal is to support family forms of care so every child can develop their potential.
At the camp families have a fantastic time with laser tag, the Family Quest, and evening entertainment like singing around the fire. There was team building for parents and teenagers, and targeted activities for each age group, all delivered by our team of 7 staff, 18 volunteers and 12 social work students who gained practical experience.
Children loved the games and clay molding, painting, cooking and floristry activities. A Sports Quest, drumming and games helped to build confidence, social skills and great memories.
Teenagers joined our STEP Life Skills workshops on Responsibility, Sex Education by the Salus foundation, and How to be Eco by the NGO Zero West.
Parents had 8 expert workshops on carefully selected topics, ranging from Child Attachment to Language Development. A psychologist helped with individual cases at private consultations.
What the parents said
“Every year before summer me and my whole family look forward to these few days we can spend with like-minded people and volunteers. Every time I am surprised about the creativity and great organisation of all the workshops, and the usefulness of the activities and entertainment. We spent an amazing four days, thank you so much for this! " – Zhanna Goroshko, Family Style Orphanage mother
“This was the first time I had the opportunity to participate in the Family Camp… I feel overwhelmed and can hardly find the right words to express my gratitude to the Care in Action team. To say thank you and that we are all pleased, it is to say … nothing. I would rather shout “You are great people, you do extremely good work!” Here I have found friends and like-minded people. I have attended training sessions that were so well selected and of course, I could see the smiling and happy eyes of my kids.” – Oksana Dadak, foster mother
A big thank you to all of our donors, partners and volunteers who work with us to make Family Camps possible!
Your gift can change lives for the better. Donations enable us to fund the services and programs that strengthen, empower and prepare children in care to enter the working world and lead a productive, independent life.
