Foster parenting is widely recognised as the best model of care for orphans, whose personal development needs are often neglected in traditional institutions, yet these parents typically receive little to no support or guidance.
That’s why supporting foster parents with childcare training and a chance to refuel and connect with other caregivers through the Together is Better programme is a core pillar of Care of Action’s work. We know these care givers can only give the children the upbringing they deserve if they themselves are mentored, supported, and trained in childcare strategies.
Together with 15 volunteers, the Care in Action team went the extra mile to not only make the event educational, but to give foster parents and their children the best time of their lives. The children enjoyed confidence boosting games and fun, including a rope park visit, cycling trip, treasure hunts, dancing, and cooking. Special events were held in the evenings such as a Holifests, Hawaiian party, and colour run.
Topics covered in workshops for children include:
Here are some reactions from the children:
“This organisation is one of the best. I want more camps and events with you.”
“It was the best 4 days ever. I’m very thankful to this team who worked and gave so much to all of us.”
“Care in Action, thank you for a wonderful 4 days in the camp. The Holifest and Hawaiian party were amazing! I love you all and I hope to see you soon.”
For foster parents, the camps not only offered training in parenting skills, but also a chance to recharge tired batteries and have a break from 24/7 care for children. We know caring for children and teenagers with difficult backgrounds is challenging, and we remain committed to giving the carers as well as the children the ongoing support they need.
Here’s what the foster parents had to say:
“Our daughter drastically changed – she was not afraid to interact with the volunteers. She was so joyful and happy – no more words are needed!”
“The workshops are extremely interesting, and meeting other foster families who have rich experiences to share is very valuable. Such camps are a big need.”
“I liked that you took into consideration the needs of the children and their age groups and that parents could enjoy a break while the children had wonderful activities!”
We want to say thank you to our tireless, caring volunteers and the interns from Life Safety University for the countless hours and dedication given to the children.
Care in Action would also like to sincerely thank donors who make these camps possible, as well as our partners from the Lviv Educational Foundation, and the Lviv City Hall Service for Children’s Affairs.
