Guardian Angel Mentoring

“Guardian Angel”
one on one mentoring for vulnerable children

The aim of the project is to support a vulnerable child’s development and help prepare them for independent living through the active support of a mentor.

Research confirms that “The positive effect of one loving relative, mentor or friend can overwhelm the negative effects of the bad things that happen. What goes right is more important than what goes wrong. “George Vaillant , ‘Triumphs of Experience”. “The secret to life is good and enduring intimate relationships and friendships”.

A “Guardian Angel” Mentor accepts the child the way he or she is and provides the positive influence that has so often been lacking during the suffering and hardships they have experienced. Through friendship, encouragement, fun activities the Mentor boosts a child’s self-confidence and self-esteem and accompanies them gently through the maze of life and adolescence.

The heart of the program: Building up a personal relationship on a simple, stable, regular friendship basis! No special skills are needed! One must simply be interested in the child and spend some time with him / her on a regular basis, ideally weekly, but no less than 4 hours a month basis for at least 1 year.

“Guardian Angels”:

  • Become a friend to the child; It often has more impact than trying to be a teacher.
  • Motivate and develop the child’s hobby, occasionally assistance with homework, strengthen the child’s self-confidence and help them to learn to accept themselves;
  • Transfer cultural, ethical and moral values;
  • Help the child to develop talents and realize goals;
  • Provide some support during the difficult transition to independent living.

Together we can make a difference. Sharing just a few hours of our time, paying attention, showing interest, giving love and care – we can change and strengthen their vulnerable lives. A Mentor presents the child with an opportunity to learn more about life, have better future possibilities and feel that they are wanted, needed and respected in this world. As in any friendship we need to be patient, persistent, caring and responsible so that the child will benefit in the long run.

As the professional scouter Forest E. Witcraft once said: “A hundred years from now it will not matter what your bank account was, the sort of house you lived in, or the kind of car you drove… but the world may become a better place because you were important
in the life of a child”
